The screening of “The Encampments” highlighted a vital truth: our movement is both big and powerful. Outside of what we saw as proof in the film itself, was the fact that this year's attendance was one of the highest for a political documentary at the Reel Work Labor Film Festival in recent years.
After the film, Co-Director and Producer Michael T. Workman shared the extensive effort put into weaving together the narratives of student activists who sparked this movement across campuses with the historical context of student protests against war crimes.
A notable difference between today’s university protests and those of the past is the increased suppression and militarization of police forces. This escalation poses greater threats to student's freedoms and rights, and we owe immense gratitude to the students who exemplify solidarity and resistance in the face of politicians run by lobbyists and special interests.
To effectively oppose genocide and the use of our tax dollars for war crimes, we need representatives who truly reflect the values of their communities. It is essential to have leaders who will advocate for the majority and act as genuine voices for the people. That’s what we’re fighting for, together.
Thank you to the Reel Work Labor Film Festival for hosting this important community event. Special thanks to Santa Cruz Jews for a Free Palestine and the Santa Cruz Green Party for co-sponsoring the screening.
